More detail:
2020-06-10: If ever there was a sweet grandpa dog, Nudge is the one! He was named within one hour of him being with his foster mom, as he was nudging and placing his paw on her leg. Nudge is 12 years old and he came into SCLRR from a local shelter. When we first met him he was not in the best shape - he was able to make 2-3 steps then his back legs would fail him. He would need help to get back up. That changed a lot for the better since we had him in foster care.

He still has some physical limitations. He occasionally stumbles, but not very often because he started an injectable medicine called Adequan that can be maintained at home with 1-2 injections per month. He loves to go for walks and gets very excited to go, but can only go for about 10 mins, but he may be able to gradually increase the duration. He needs a little more leash training, but slows down after a couple of mins. He walks with his foster sister, so it's not too difficult. Nudge has been living with 2 small dogs, one of which is blind. He is very gentle around them, but sometimes when excited he may bump into them. Nudge barks when his foster mom leaves the room, but is still in the house. He does not continue to bark when she leaves outside of the home. He's usually asleep when his foster mom returns. He just likes company and a lot of lovin'.

Nudge may have been a scrap eating dog as he doesn't like dry kibble, but eats canned food & home cooked food, especially when it's wrapped in a flour tortilla! Nudge weighs 63 lbs. and could use to gain a little more weight. He had blood work, X-rays, ultrasounds, his teeth cleaned, and several extractions so his mouth is in good shape now.

He would do well in a house with a lot of area rugs or carpet & minimal stairs. Nudge is hard of hearing, but is learning hand signals. His vision is fine as he sees the squirrels running along the power lines! Nudge has only one thing that we haven't been able to get him to stop which is his searching for rocks, dirt or paper to eat. We've mentioned it to the doctor and there is nothing wrong with his lab work so she suggested probiotics which he has been taking.

Nudge is currently on joint supplements, an anti-inflammatory medication (Meloxicam), and Probiotics. He is also getting Adequan injections 1-2 times a month, as needed.

Nudge is housebroken & if he's lying down on a slippery surface where he thinks he can't get up he'll bark to let you know he needs to go outside. Nudge loves everyone who has been in his foster home & does not jump up on anyone. He just wants to hang out with you & be a part of the family. He's a very low key lovable boy!
